Presentation on Blessed Titus Brandsma This will take place on Sunday the 7th of March @ 4pm. To register contact [email protected] or telephone 07849 596572 When Blessed Titus Brandsma was accused by some of his students of speaking about God in all his teachings in philosophy, he responded: “I can’t help it, that in all things, God gives witness to himself”. In all things God gives witness to himself: in all creation, in all that is; light, shadow and darkness. In reflecting on the life and teachings of this martyr, we can learn that the way he did not succumb in the cruelty of Camp Amersfoort and Dachau, is fundamentally embedded in his spirituality, which is thoroughly Carmelite. SPRED Special Second Collection - 14 February 2021
Our Paisley Diocese SPRED offers people with learning disabilities: a personal friend who takes time to share life and faith, spiritual nurture in a small community of faith; and a sense of belonging to a parish community. Twenty-one SPRED groups meet in our church halls and special needs schools, allowing two hundred parishioners to come together in faith and friendship to share and experience God’s love. Sadly, our groups have not been able to meet in the past year due to the pandemic. Paisley SPRED supports three employees. In 2018 SPRED merged with the Diocese bringing in one-off restricted reserves of £95,492. Our SPRED boxes and Friends Campaign raised an additional £20,834 bringing the total income to £116,326. The Diocese also contributed £44,131 from our General Fund (pre-merger) and Papal & Episcopal Funds. With our expenditure of £72,221, SPRED restricted reserves ended the year at £88,235. Parish Finances At this time when we have limited access to the Church and have no public services our Parish income is greatly affected. The Parish and Diocese are dependent on your weekly donations to enable bills to be paid, to make repairs and maintain our church properties, as well as supporting the clergy and the ongoing pastoral work of our Parish and the Diocese. We calculate the potential loss of weekly income for St John Barrhead is around £2,892 per week. This equates to £12,532 over the next month with no/restricted numbers at public masses. St Thomas is £600 per week and so £2,800 over the next month. You may wish to consider a Standing Order to be paid directly to the parish account (weekly/monthly). You can download the form from the Parish websites (click here) or one can be posted to you. Thank you to all those who have recently moved to Standing Order so as to be able to support our finances regularly. Another way of helping the parish is by gift aiding your donations. If you are a tax payer Gift Aid increases your donation by 25%, your Gift Aid donation would be worth 25p more for every £1 donated. Click here to download the Gift Aid declaration. You can also donate to the Parish using the MyGivingHub facility provided by the Diocese, which allows you to make a single donation, set up a recurring donation and add Gift Aid if you choose. Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday is this Wednesday the 17th of February, a day of Fasting (for those aged 16+) and Abstinence from meat (aged 14+). Fasting consists of one full meal per day, with two smaller meals that do not add up to a full meal, and no snacks. Those who have chronic illness, pregnant/nursing babies are exempt from fasting. There are as follows Carmen Cassidy, Allana Connelly, Stephanie Barrett, Patsy Carlin, Lee Martin, Gerry Byrne, Stephen Callaghan, Peter Strain. Finance & Fabric Committee Kevin Brown, John Thomson, Phil Crampsie, Marion Carlton, Maureen Smith. Meetings will be set up soon via Zoom. St Peter Julian Eymard said “Devotion, to St Joseph is one of the choicest graces that God can give a soul, for it is tantamount to revealing the entire treasury of our Lord’s graces. When God wishes to raise a soul to greater heights, he unites it to St Joseph by giving it a strong love for the good Saint”. Please go to the Parish websites/facebook for Prayers to St Joseph. Book here > Celebrating Christmas Day over the Christmas Octave For Catholics Christmas is not just 25 December but the Church’s liturgy extends it over an Octave of eight days that prolong the solemnity of Christmas Day. The Christmas Octave lasts from Christmas Day until 1 January when we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. Every day within the octave is treated the same as the original feast day of the Nativity of our Lord with the Gloria repeated. This is because the great feasts of our redemption cannot be grasped in a single celebration and need a full week to consider the mystery. In Scriptures the number eight represents perfection and rest. So, we would encourage you during Covid restrictions to book to come to Mass on any of those days, knowing that you are truly still celebrating Christmas Day. Bishop’s Christmas Message and Blessing Dear Brothers and Sisters, I want to assure you of my closeness to you in prayers and daily Masses in these days, and to wish you all the peace and joy of the Infant King of Bethlehem in this Christmas which is like no other. I pray in hope for you to enjoy a blessed Christmas filled with the consolations of faith and the affection of family and loved ones all around. May the angels, who watched over the Holy Family of Jesus, Our Lady and Saint Joseph as they gathered around the manger, keep you safe in mind and body. May the New Year beckon fresh optimism for the virus to be checked and sure hope in the LORD to deliver our world from all evils. May Our Lady’s prayers fill you with the wonder of the season and may the Year of Saint Joseph bring you growing confidence in Our Heavenly Father’s good providence to restore to us in abundance the human touch we have lost a while and now more than ever cherish.
